Health Experts Work to Forestall New COVID-19 Mutations

A recent article by Local10 News titled "Coronavirus Pandemic Enters New Phase Amid Race Against Dangerous COVID Evolution
" gathered the statements made by Miami officials on what seems to be a new stage in the fight against the pandemic.
Despite all the progress made to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.K. variant is already at the core of a new wave of infections all around Florida. Scientific evidence shows that this new strain is far more contagious and potentially deadlier than other mutations. Hence, various experts consider the possibility of a new phase of the pandemic being prompted by the virus's evolution capacity.
Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and Miami Commissioner Joe Carrollo share many of these concerns and warn the population against neglecting safety guidelines. Now with state data
showing that Miami-Dade is near a total of 400,000 COVID-19 cases there is plenty of chance for the virus to continue evolving.
The state of Florida is administering both the Pfizer/BioNTech and the Moderna/NIH vaccines, but risks remain at an all-time high with the reported shortages of vaccine supplies in Miami-Dade. Projections are still promising, however, after the Florida Department of Health reported the vaccination of 240,000 individuals in the Miami-Dade area. Mayor Suarez also described a downward trend for all major metrics tracking the pandemic's impact, saying that "hospitalizations hopefully in the next few days will go below 800. At their worst, they were at 2,300".
As the new strain raises the stakes, the risks of escape mutants become higher, as stated by infectious diseases expert Dr. Aileen Marty and President Biden's chief medical adviser, Dr. Anthony Fauci. The window of time between the two vaccine doses marks a potential drop of antibodies, enhancing the virus's ability to mutate. This has pushed scientists to work on a booster shot for the Moderna vaccine.
